Dank Memes for Education

I have two things I must admit:

1. Two-thirds of the text conversation that takes place between my husband and I, on a daily basis, involves the sharing of memes.

And

2. It is my dream to one day create a meme that goes viral.

Now that I've shared my soul with you all, let's talk about memes and education. If you're not familiar with memes, they are those (usually) funny, one-lined pictures you see shared on social media.

While memes have traditionally been used for entertainment value, a few forward-thinking teachers around the world are already applying memes to their lessons to garner student interest:

Number types can be fun!

    I'm laughing and learning!

For great tips on creating and using educational memes, check out this article from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) .

  1. This is awesome, and I am all for it. Using humor is a wonderful way to grab someone's attention and get them engaged in the course material. I remember my high school Chemistry teacher starting the first day of class out with a joke, "A neutron walks into a bar and asks how much for a drink. The bartender replies, "For you, no charge". After that joke, he went into the lesson and I remember listening a bit more intently. The guy was already fairly interesting, but he somehow connected with me on a deeper level by ensuring that we were not bored out of our minds. Thank you for this! Maybe, as a class, we can help you create a meme that goes viral?

    1. I have something like that planned for a bit later. Hang tight a bit ... we always have a few folks who don't know what memes are and we need to get them up to speed on everything else first.
Past classes have not been successful at spreading memes, but there's always this year, right?

  2. Memes are great! I like what you have going on here. Feels relaxing. I too have a secrete untapped curiosity for meme generation. I have fallen into a strait forward job situation but have always been fascinated by people who make it big on their own. I think about pod casters, joke writers, comic creation, and meme generation falls right in there. All those cartoons creators that continued to work for years past the age of retirement. Constant generation of witty commentary is difficult. Talk to them and they all have developed a process. Finding yours will only come with practice. And so here we are, haha. I’ve tried one meme on Facebook and it was in 2013. I don’t post often and only have somewhere around 340 followers so not many saw the post. Only one person liked it. My review of the technological progress in transportation was not well received.

Keep up the killer meme work!

    1. Haha nice meme! The thing that strikes me about meme creation is how often one may come up with a seemingly original meme, only to to see several different versions of your same idea online, which has happened to me twice. Sadly, either I don't have enough followers for my memes to go viral or perhaps my meme wasn't the best of all available options.

Anyhow, copied below is my most recent original meme. I was watching the Grammy's coverage in February and noted Cee Lo Green's odd outfit: https://twitter.com/csbean81/status/830968648437207040

    2. Awesome! Nice space integration with that meme. Spaceballs is such a classic! I think this calls for LUDICROUS SPEED! Haha. Cee Lo definitely went out there on that wardrobe choice. You have the meme makers eye!
